Music Beyond Borders: New Zealand Flashback

Music is a universal phenomenon, but as we know, can change from region to region, place to place and in this case island to island. The award winning world music group Te Vaka is based in New Zealand but its sounds come from all over Polynesia. On Wed 12 Mar the group performed before a live audience in Studio One and took us all on a very long journey where we gained insight into a few different ways of life. It was for another ‘Music Beyond Borders’ concert, all about experiencing unique sounds from other places, first-hand.

Te Vaka has performed in over 30 countries around the world and released five albums to date. The music comes from the personal experiences of its founder Opetaia Foa’i who made his way from the islands of Tokelau, Samoa and Tuvalu to New Zealand. The songs are in the languages of these islands and are meant to help keep these languages alive.

The music is traditionally influenced - tribal, powerful and rootsy, also melodic, warm and earthy. Log drums are an important part of the sound, capturing the infectious rhythms of the South Seas. Dance also features as a prominent part of the show.

Te Vaka’s music is uplifting and alive, solid and sincere. You can view the show as a webcast or listen to the programme online or even download a bit for your i-pod. The photos here also speak for the Te Vaka experience.

The choreography for this song is influenced very strongly by the traditional “Fatele” from Tokelau.

19.11.07 West Side Story at 50 listen 收聽LISTEN
One of the most lauded musicals ever written, West Side Story is loosely based on Romeo and Juliet. August 2007 has just seen the release of one of the only major recordings of this masterpiece to have been made since the 1984 version with Leonard Bernstein himself conducting, and has been made with the authorisation of the Bernstein foundation in New York. The cast in the seminal 1984 recording included Kiri Te Kanawa, Jose Carreras, Tatiana Troyanos, Kurt Ollmann and Marilyn Horne. In this version the part of Maria (Kiri Te Kanawa) is passed over to fellow Kiwi Hayley Westenra who pairs up with Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo. This is set to become the recording of choice for the 21st Century West Side Story lover.

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa

It is for her performance at the 1981 wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in St Paul's Cathedral that Kiri Te Kanawa is best remembered by many New Zealanders. An estimated television audience of 600 million people saw her perform Handel's ‘Let the bright seraphim’. Tune in to hear her early recordings of ‘I feel pretty’ and ‘One hand, one heart’ and more.

Douglas Lilburn
. . . is described as "the elder statesman of New Zealand music".

Lilburn's early music shows the influence of Sibelius and of his teacher, Vaughan Williams, later to echo American composers like Walter Piston and Roy Harris - and like theirs - his music evokes wide-open, large-scale landscapes. That's hardly surprising: Lilburn loved New Zealand's grandiose scenery and would escape to tramp around it whenever he could, repaying the debt in his music.

In the early 60s he was already experimenting with electronic music, a medium that continued to fascinate him over the coming decades. His last compositions, which integrate electronic and live music, fuse together the two main strands of his creative development.

On November 26, 27 and 30, NZ composers works will be presented at the (ISCM) World Music Days Festival 2007. The Monday Concert will feature the works of some of those composers: Jack Body, Anthony Ritchie, Samuel Holloway and Chinese composer (NZ resident) Shen Na lin.

CANZ

Jack Body
His music has been played and broadcast widely, nationally and internationally. He has been commissioned by the NZ String Quartet, the NZ Symphony Orchestra, and many others, and has written three works for the Kronos Quartet. His opera Alley was premiered to wide acclaim at the 1998 NZ International Festival of the Arts. This work incorporated Chinese instruments in a Western ensemble and featured Chinese singers, including two authentic folksingers from Gansu, North West China. In 2003 he was a featured composer at the Other Minds Festival in San Francisco, and with the Atlas Ensemble at the 2004 Holland Festival.

Anthony Ritchie
Ritchie has composed a richly varied body of work, ranging from theatre music to chamber works. In 2000 his Symphony No.2 was premiered at the International Festival of the Arts, followed up by the comic opera Quartet, at the 2004 Festival, both commissions from the Festival. Anthony has also composed film music for orchestra, in collaboration with Natural History NZ, including Southern Journeys (2000) and Timeless Land (2003). In 2004 his fifth opera, The God Boy, was a critically acclaimed success at the Otago Arts Festival.

Samuel Holloway

Samuel Holloway is a Pukekohe-born writer and composer. He studied composition with John Elmsly and Eve de Castro-Robinson at the University of Auckland where he was awarded major prizes and graduated Master of Music. In 2006 he was awarded the CANZ Trust Fund Award. His work has been performed by the New Zealand Trio, 175 East, the Auckland Philharmonia and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

Shen Na lin

An excerpt from his opera Fatal Desire was recently performed at the Asia Pacific Festival in February 2007. A poet in an alien environment finds himself torn between love for his wife and desire for his ‘ideal lover’.

The ISCM concerts will be recorded by Radio 4 and broadcast in January 2008 (t.b.c.)
