Amy Kwong, Director of Communications and Culture British Council, Julien Dedman, Stacey Rodda“The 2005 series of Music Beyond Borders began on September 16 with a show featuring British singer/songwriter Mara Carlyle accompanied by guitarist Chris Morphitis that ended with a surprise appearance by the British violin duo DUEL. There was a reception before Music Beyond Borders: Britain, the Studio One audiencethe show featuring the best of British traditional cuisine served up with a modern edge. You've never had fish and chips or roast beef and Yorkshire pudding quite like it. The event was co-presented by RTHK Radio 4 and the British Consulate General and the British Council, Hong Kong.

British Consul General Stephen Bradley, Presenters Stacey Rodda and Kathy LamPerforming before a full house in Studio One, Mara Carlyle made her Hong Kong debut accompanied by good friend Chris Morphitis on guitar. She premiered some new tracks about to be recorded for a folk album in the making, but most came from her CD ‘The Lovely' which received rave reviews back in the UK.

Chris Morphitis and Mara CarlyleShe performed the haunting, "Saw Song", demonstrating Mara's saw playing skills and swooping vocal range; "I Blame You Not", a loose jazzy arrangement of a piece of Schumann; "Bonding" and "Bravely Born(e)", both awash with sweet forties-style harmonies and her ukulele strummed its way through the quirky fairytale "Baby Bloodheart". She learnt the local smash hit “Under the Lion Rock” in Cantonese especially for the concert and closed it with the uplifting "For Me".

After Mara and Chris came a surprise appearance by DUEL with just minutes to go, who had just come from another gig nearby. DUEL, who are Greg Scott and Craig Owen, were discovered while busking in Manchester by the flamboyant pop music producer, Pete Waterman. He produced their debut release which went to No. 1 in the UK classical chart. DUEL managed to get in two tracks: “Danse Macabre” by Saint-Saens and “Hungarian Dance No. 5” by Brahms. Their performance was electrifying and a total contrast to Mara's chill-out sound, showing the wealth of talent that is coming out of Britain today and just why Britain is so great. ”
