九 十 歲 的 季 羡 林 三 分 之 二 人 生 與 東 方 語 言 結 下 不 解 之 緣 ， 他 是 東 亞 第 一
個 通 曉 吐 火 羅 語 的 語 言 專 家 ， 也 是 一 手 將 印 度 梵 文 納 入 中 國 最 高 學 府 的 創
辦 人 。 季 老 現 在 是 北 京 大 學 唯 一 的 終 身 教 授 。
季 老 1934 年 畢 業 於 清 華 大 學 西 洋 文 學 系 ， 師 從 中 國 著 名 學 者 陳 寅 恪 、 朱
自 清 、 俞 平 伯 等 等 。 1935 年 以 交 換 研 究 生 身 份 入 讀 德 國 哥 廷 根 大 學 ， 達 成
自 己 學 習 梵 文 、 巴 利 文 的 心 願 。
在 中 國 ， 季 老 被 尊 為 國 寶 級 的 學 術 大 師 。 國 際 上 他 的 學 術 地 位 亦 備 受 推
祟 。 原 來 他 的 名 聲 只 在 教 育 界 和 學 術 界 流 傳 。 一 九 九 八 年 他 的 " 牛 棚
雜 憶 " 出 版 後 ， 季 羨 林 這 名 字 便 在 一 般 讀 者 處 留 下 印 象 。
季 老 的 經 歷 反 映 了 中 國 知 識 份 子 的 風 骨 及 在 中 國 當 知 識 份 子 的 難 處 。
Professor Ji Xianlin is considered as a treasure
in China's academia. His scholastic speciality is unusual, to say
the least... Sanskrit of India and Tokharian of central Asia.
Now 90 years old, Ji is held in high esteem. But he was fortunate
to survive the Cultural Revolution. Asked what his worst experience
was during those disastrous years, he would say it was neither the
physical pain nor the insults; it was the loss of dignity, being
treated like an untouchabel in India's caste system.
Though he is now, in his own words, 'extremely
popular', he still has haunting memories like these -- "I have
never believed in so-called reincarnation. But now, if I am allowed
to believe in it once, I would pray with all my heart that, no matter
what my next life if going to be, I will never never be tormented
as an intellectual."
