Carter accuses US of human rights abuses

The former US President, Jimmy Carter, has accused the United States of committing human rights abuses by withholding food aid from North Korea.

Mr Carter has just finished a two-day visit to North Korea.

He said the North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il had expressed the wish to meet the South Korean President, Lee Myung-bak.

Efforts to improve inter-Korean relations have been deadlocked, with the North refusing to accept blame for two deadly border incidents last year.
