Veteran dissident accused of subversion

Chinese authorities have arrested a veteran dissident, Zhu Yufu, on subversion charges after detaining him last month. He's the fourth activist known to have been arrested on the same charge in recent days.

Police in Hangzhou told Mr Zhu's wife that prosecutors have approved his arrest for inciting state power. She said that before he was detained, he was followed everywhere he went for 20 days so he never had any chance to take part in political activities.

The subversion charge is a broad accusation, often used to punish those who denounce the Communist Party and call for democratic reform. Three other dissidents have already been arrested under it since the authoritiers began a broad clampdown in February.

None of them have anything near the prominence of artist and activist Ai Weiwei, whose recent detention has triggered international criticism.
