A mainland activist lawyer and
his wife are reported to have
been beaten by security
officials for making a secret
video that showed their life
under illegal house arrest.
China Human Rights Defenders
says a reliable source told it
that Chen Guangcheng and his
wife have been blocked from
going to hospital after the
beating, which was described
as "not light" but not
life-threatening.
Mr Chen, a blind, self-taught
lawyer, was released from jail
last September. In the video,
which has now been posted on
You Tube, he talks about being
kept under round-the-clock
surveillance since his release
by a 22-man security team.
He says he has come out of a
small jail and walked into a
bigger one. Mr Chen is one of
China's best-known activists.
His case was mentioned in a
speech by the US Secretary of
State, Hillary Clinton,
shortly before President Hu
Jintao's visit to Washington last month.
