Police shots could have hit HK hostages

08-09-2010

A computer simulation of the Manila tour-bus shootout has revealed that shots fired by Philippine police into the hijacked vehicle could have hit the hostages. A simulation of the fatal exchange of gunfire between hostage-taker Rolando Mendoza and Philippine commandos storming the bus showed the trajectory of the shots fired by both sides.

The simulation -- which was played to a public inquiry in Manila -- did not identify the specific shots that directly struck the hostages, but it indicated that a number fired through the windscreen by police could have hit someone inside.

However, Philippine police said earlier that initial forensics examinations had revealed that all eight Hong Kong people killed in the shootout were shot by Mr Mendoza, and not by officers.
