The Chief Executive, Donald
Tsang, has said the Democratic
Party's proposed amendment to
the government's political
reform package is "rich in
democratic elements". Mr
Tsang's comment follows a
series of similar remarks made
by both mainland and Hong Kong
officials.
Mr Tsang said even if the
government adopts the
Democratic Party's proposal, which involves direct
elections for district council
functional constituency seats,
there's no need to defer the
tabling of the motions in
Legco on Wednesday. That's
because the party's proposal involves only local
legislation and it would not
require any change to the motions.
The Chief Executive said the government is still
meeting with different
political parties to lobby for
the 40 votes it needs in Legco
for the package to be passed.
Mr Tsang
was speaking at a rally in Victoria Park
organised by the
pro-government Alliance for
Constitutional Development to support the reform package. Organisers claimed more than 100,000 people took part.
