The Chief Secretary, Henry
Tang, says the Democratic
Party has taken a "courageous
and forward-looking step" in
discussions on the 2012
political reform package. The
party is likely to support the
package if it includes direct
elections for proposed new
district council functional
constituency seats. Speaking
on a radio programme, Mr Tang
said it was good to see that
certain parties hadn't "gone
to the extreme".
But pan-democrat legislators
are split on the proposed
compromise. The founding chairman of the
Democratic Party, Martin Lee, said on RTHK's "Hong Kong Letter" programme that even if there were direct elections for the new functional constituency seats, the right
to stand for election or make
nominations would still be
limited to specific groups of
people.
Mr Lee added that by
recently describing the government's
proposed election methods for
new functional constituency seats as "appropriate",
Beijing was making an excuse to keep the seats indefinitely.
