A zoo in northeastern China
has been ordered to close
after a spate of deaths of
Siberian tigers because of
malnutrition and poor living
conditions. The state-run
Global Times says the Forestry
Ministry has ordered the
Shenyang Zoo to suspend
operations. The Beijing News
quotes a zoo official as
saying up to 50 tigers may
have died there since 2000 and
it was an open secret that the
zoo was producing and selling
tiger bone Chinese medicine.
