Claims of Beijing 'meddling' rejected

21-11-2009

The Hong Kong government has dismissed concerns raised in a report to the US Congress, that Beijing has been increasing its influence over Hong Kong politically and economically. The claims, made by the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, were descrbied by the SAR government as groundless and misguided. The annual report said the Central Government had been increasing its influence over Hong Kong affairs by strengthening the position of its Liaison Office in the SAR and by promoting pro-Beijing parties in the Legislative Council. Beijing is also accused of taking an active role to limit demonstrations in Hong Kong marking the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown, by denying visas to activists hoping to enter the territory. And it added that Beijing is reining in Hong Kong by chipping away at the legal support for its autonomy in domestic affairs.
