Thai premier dismisses calls to resign

Thailand's embattled prime minister has dismissed calls for his resignation, saying that stepping down would not resolve the country's deepening political crisis. Somchai Wongsawat made the comment in a nationally televised address. Anti-government protesters have demanded that Mr Somchai resign to take responsibility for violent clashes last between protesters and riot police that killed three people and wounded nearly 500 protesters. The premier expressed regret about the violence, and issued a renewed plea for reconciliation.
