12-10-2008

In an attempt to deal with the effects of the global credit crunch, three more governments --Australia, New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates -- have announced that they'll guarantee deposits in their countries' banks. ,The Australian prime minister, Kevin Rudd, said the guarantee was for all deposits for the next three years. Mr Rudd said he wouldn't stand idly by as the problems facing the world economy worsened. In New Zealand, the government has offered a two-year guarantee for all retail bank deposits. And the United Arab Emirates said it would ensure that all deposits and savings in local banks were safe.
