Chinese troops are rushing to
plug what's been described as
"extremely dangerous" cracks
in a large dam upriver from
the earthquake devastated city
of Dujiangyan, in Sichuan
province. Xinhua News Agency
said 2,000 troops had been
sent to work on the Zipingpu
Dam. Xinhua quoted the
Ministry of Water Resources
has warned that Dujiangyan
would be "swamped" if there
were major problems there.
Dujiangyan is not far from
Wenchuan, the epicenter of the
7.9-magnitude quake. Earlier,
the National Development
Reform Commission, China's top
economic planning body, said
the earthquake had damaged 391
dams, but didn't say if
Zipingpu was one of them.
