The United Nations has called for an air or sea corridor to be opened to channel large amounts of aid to victims of the cyclone in Burma. A spokeswoman said there was a risk of a second catastrophe unless a massive aid operation was put in place rapidly. The Burmese military government says it remains opposed to letting in foreign aid workers. The current president of the UN security council, the British ambassador John Sawers, has criticised the Burmese authorities for failing to accept more help from the international community.
