Major earthquake in Sichuan rocks wide area

A major earthquake has just struck Sichuan province, less than 100-kilometres from the provincial capital, Chengdu. According to the US Geological Survey, the tremor measured seven-point-eight on the Richter Scale just before two-thirty, local time. As yet, there've been no communications from the area, but the quake has been felt thousands of kilometres away. People as far away as Beijing and Shanghai report that office buildings swayed. Similar reports are also coming in from Bangkok and Taiwan. ¡õ And the Hong Kong Observatory has just issued an urgent earthquake message saying that people in to say they felt the tremor at 2.31pm. The Observatory says it's now analysing its data and will issue a statement shortly.
