The South African president, Thabo Mbeki, has held talks in Harare in an attempt to resolve the crisis over Zimbabwe's disputed presidential election. South African officials say Mr Mbeki is concerned about violence ahead of a run-off election -- but a spokesman for the opposition MDC party, Hebson Makuvise, said the visit would have few results. Human rights groups have reported a dramatic escalation of organised violence and torture since the beginning of this month.
