The authorities in Guangdong say nine people are missing after an accident brought down part of a main road bridge yesterday. The accident occurred when a barge, carrying 2,000 tonnes of sand rammed into one of the bridge supports. Government officials say four vehicles plunged into the West River when a 200-metre section of the Jiujiang bridge collapsed. Seven of the missing people were inside the vehicles while the other two were workmen on the bridge. Divers and vessels equipped with sonar equipment are being deployed to assist in the search.
