HK disappointed by Doha talks collapse

Hong Kong is offering to mediate the just-collapsed Doha trade liberalization talks. Disagreement over the politically-loaded issue of agricultural subsidies once again forced a breakdown. Hong Kong's director-general of trade and industry, Raymond Young, says the S-A-R -- which hosted the last round of Doha negotiations here -- has a "moral high-ground" on free trade that allows it to play the role of "honest broker." He said the administration still hopes the talks can resume. In a related development, China has urged WTO members to work towards a resumption of world trade talks, saying their recent collapse was a setback for everyone. Ministry of Commerce spokesman Chong Quan said China was willing to work with all sides to relaunch the process as soon as possible.
