文人

man of letters是文人、作家，例如說某人是a man of letters。man of war不是指人，而是指兵艦。manpower是勞動力、人手。

同類的人

birds of the same feather/birds of a feather是一個成語，字面意思是同一種羽毛的雀鳥，那即是說同類的人聚在一起，它本身只是中性詞，未必有貶義，要看上下文。

知識豐富

short of funds是資金短缺，例句：I was short of funds last month.（我上月資金短缺。）a fund of knowledge是知識豐富，例句：He has a fund of knowledge about flying.（他的飛行知識豐富。）

一觸即怒

談一個字touchy，意思是很易發怒，很易煩惱。例句：He is a little touchy about his grey hair.（他很易為自己的白髮感到苦惱。）

驚險過關

touch-and-go是驚險地過關，例句：She drove the car carelessly and it was touch-and-go for her to avoid an accident.（她不小心駕駛，只是驚險地避過意外。）

遠足

trek是長途步行，We often go trekking in Nepal.（我們在尼泊爾常常作長途步行。）hike是遠足，I love to go hiking in the hills./I love to hike in the hills.（我喜歡到山上遠足。）trek比hike來得長途，trek有時可能長達幾天，hike只是一天或半天。

酒肉朋友

fair-weather friend，字面是晴朗天氣的朋友，意思是酒肉朋友，能共享樂，但不能共患難。例句：After I got into trouble, all my fair-weather friends left me.（我有麻煩時，酒肉朋友都離我而去。）a friend in high places，是非富則貴的朋友。例句：He has many friends in high places.（他有很多富貴的朋友。）

毫不相愛

再談一個成語：There is no love lost between the sisters.字面是兩姊妹並沒有損失甚麼愛心，實際是說兩姊妹不相愛、不咬弦，再沒甚麼愛意可損失。另一個說法是There is little love between the sisters.也是說兩姊妹並不相愛。也可以用sympathy（同情）一字取代love，例句：There is little sympathy for the poor.（大家對窮人缺乏同情心。）

常客

談三個從法文來的字。habitue是常客，例句：He is a habitue of this restaurant.（他是這家餐廳的常客。）in extremis是臨終，例句：He turns to religion when in extremis.（他臨終時皈依宗教。）pour boire是小費，例句：I gave the taxi driver a small pour boire.（我給的士司機一點小費。）

袖裡乾坤

up your sleeve形容把秘密收藏起來，到符合自己的利益時，才把秘密說出來。例句：It is wise to have something up your sleeve when dealing with a customer you do not know.（與不認識的顧客打交道時，應該把部分秘密收藏起來。）
