After hosting a few episodes for Jazzing Up, I started wondering how many people really enjoy and understand the music I have put on air. I remember some comments by people I have met at my performances:
“Jazz music is for musicians, not for audiences, too hard to understand…”
“I want to learn Jazz but cannot afford to study at music schools overseas.”
In an environment that is so lacking in exposure to non-mainstream art forms, e.g. Jazz music, I understand why some find Jazz music hard to comprehend. The fact is Jazz does not require a diploma to be qualified to learn or enjoy it. I am truly honoured to have the support of Radio 4 and a few Hong Kong’s renowned Jazz musicians including guitarists Eugene Pao and Ken Rose, saxophonist Blaine Whittaker, pianist Ted Lo, bassist Peter Scherr who join me to host two months of workshops on air at Jazzing Up starting in October. We will do live demonstrations covering topics like Jazz music styles and rhythms; theory; improvisation and technique; our favourite Jazz musicians and their styles, and also, how to communicate musically when playing.
I hope this will open the door of Jazz music to you. Please tune in and join us!
