RTHK
started its Internet service in December 1994
and online services have been expanding over the years. All programmes
produced by RTHK are now webcast live on RTHK ON INTERNET. Online
on-demand archive services are also provided.

Beyond the limitations
of traditional TV channel, RTHK ON INTERNET now provides more than
11 hours of regular Chinese and English live TV programmes weekly.
Live
Webcast of Six Radio Channels
RTHK ON INTERNET provides
round-the-clock online live webcast of six radio channels (including
Radio 1, Radio 2, Radio 3, Radio 4, Radio 5 and Putonghua Channel),
carrying a comprehensive range of programmes in Cantonese, Putonghua
and English.
24-Hour
Instant News Online
24-hour instant Chinese
and English news, financial news, hourly updated news bulletin
and current affairs programme "HK Today", news features
are all available online. In addition, free Online News subscription
service has been launched with Chinese and English Online
News being delivered directly to subscribers via e-mail three
times daily. PDA downloadable version is also provided.
e-Learning
To arouse public
interest in life-long learning via multimedia interactive
Internet platform, our e-Learning contents encompass different
areas in literature, arts and languages. Some of the projects

History
| Dec.
1994 |
With
the assistance of the Computer Science Centre of the Chinese
University of Hong Kong (CUHK), RTHK website was launched to
provide news reports and a limited amount of television and
radio programmes online. |
| Sept.
1995 |
With
the simultaneous broadcast technology 'Live Real Audio' and
collaboration with the Progressive Network in Seattle, USA,
the election news and programmes of the Hong Kong Legislative
Council Polling Day were live webcast to the world for 36 hours,
turning a new page in the history of online live radio broadcast. |

1996 |
RTHK
hosted the 33rd Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) General
Assembly. A website was especially set up for the event and
the theme discussions were live webcast to the world. This was
the first time ABU members unable to attend the meeting could
simultaneously share the information of the General Assembly
in their own countries. |

1997 |
The
various activities celebrating the handover of Hong Kong to
China were video webcast live for 48 hours which attracted 250,000
global audience. During the 48-hour live webcast, the access
rate of RTHK ON INTERNET reached 9 million hits. |
| April
1998 |
RTHK
website was officially named RTHK ON INTERNET, providing round-the-clock
online live webcast of four radio channels, as well as on-demand
services of radio and television programmes. |
| April
2000 |
Online
webcast was fully developed. All the 6 RTHK radio channels and
all RTHK television programmes broadcast during TV prime-time
(7 hours of video programmes weekly) were webcast live. The
scripts of Chinese news were also provided. |
| Jan.2001 |
With
the support of United Nations (UN), RTHK ON INTERNET presented
"UN In Action", offering a series of short video documentaries
which feature various political, environmental, economic and
social issues. |
| Feb.2001 |
Simplied
Chinese version of the website was added to facilitate easy
browsing by overseas and Mainland Chinese. |
| March
2001 |
To
enhance the linkage with worldwide broadcasters, "Broadcasters'
Links" was added to RTHK ON INTERNET, linking up with more
than 500 radio and television websites in different countries
on the six continents. |
| April
2001 |
The
scripts of English news were added. A series of e-Learning projects
featuring culture, education, arts appreciation and language
learning was launched to provide an interactive learning platform
with multi-media content for net-users all over the world. |

2001 |
e-Finance
Channel was set up, providing instant financial news, experts'
analysis and profile of listed companies etc. |
| Nov.
2001 |
Free
Online News Subscription Service was launched. Chinese and English
Online News are delivered daily via direct e-mails to subscribers
in the morning, afternoon and evening. PDA downloadable version
is available for easy browsing by users. |

2001 |
To
further enrich the online news, original soundbites, such as
special interviews or speeches, are added to the instant news
scripts. |

Chinese
Culture Channel was launched, featuring various Chinese Culture
contents, such as "Five Thousand Years of Chinese History",
"Chinese Music
Instruments", "Chinese Fables", and "Chinese
Operatics". |

Culture
Web was launched, providing an online platform for cultural
exchange and updated information of the latest cultural events
and activities in Hong Kong. |

upgrade of the Automated Publishing System, providing a new
interface with instant online polling, discussion board and

PDA
version of RTHK ON INTERNET was launched, providing multimedia

In
celebration of the 75th anniversary of broadcasting in Hong
Kong, Classics Channel was launched with a collection of memorable
RTHK productions for the public to access online. |

Podcast Corner expanded to Podcast Station, providing more
multimedia programme choice. 3GP multimedia container format
is added,
facilitating video access by 3G mobile phone users. |

of Net-users
| The
daily access rate of RTHK ON INTERNET has increased from
an average of 7,000 hits at the end of 1994 to the present
29 million hits. Approximately 40% of these visits come
from overseas, such as mainland China, USA, Canada, United
Kingdom, Australia etc. RTHK ON INTERNET has become an
important external gateway for RTHK productions. |
